I got my first cell phone in 1998 – over 10 years ago and I’ve been connected ever since. In this post I am going to outline the phones I’ve owned over the last decade and try to give a bit of a technology overview for each.
1. Nokia 2160

This was my first cell phone. It was a gift for graduating high school. I got it towards the end of 1998.
Provider: Cantel/AT&T
Network: AMPS, TDMA 800 MHz
Battery: 600 mAh Nickel Metal Hydride
2G Talk time: 1.5 hours
2G Standby: 40 hours
Screen resolution: 2 lines LCD
This was an early PCS phone (many people still had standard analog phones at the time) and could do advanced things such as SMS text messaging. The phone however was very basic, had monophonic ring tones and no games to speak of… and I loved it!
2. Audiovox CDM 8100
This phone was a Christmas gift received during thrid year of university. It was pay as you go. It died after a night of drinking in which it somehow ended up going through the wash.
Provider: Telus
Network: AMPS, CDMA 800/1900 MHz
Battery: Lithium Ion
Talk time: 225 minutes
Standby: 170 hours
Screen resolution: 7 lines (varying width)
This phone was on a pay as you go plan – the only phone I ever had as such and my only experience with Telus.
3. Motorola C333
This is the worst cell phone I have ever owned. The ring was too quiet and meant a lot of missed calls and it’s speaker again was too quiet making it difficult to hear people. It was cool in the sense that it had polyphonic ringtones, changeable faceplates had games and could surf the internet but on the whole it really sucked. It also broke a couple of times and had to be replaced.
Provider: Rogers
Network: GSM 850/1900 MHz
Battery: Lithium Ion
Talk time: 300 minutes
Standby: 250 hours
Screen resolution: LCD
4. Audiovox CDM 8910
This phone was a birthday gift from around 2005. It was my first phone with a camera and could do some pretty cool stuff.
Provider: Bell
Network: CDMA 1900
Battery: 1000 mAh Lithium Ion
Talk time: 190 minutes
Standby: 250 hours
Screen resolution: 128×160 16bit colour
Camera: 0.3 megapixel
5. Blackberry 8700r
This was my first Blackberry and I loved it. It was built like a tank, had the famous scroll wheel and of course pulled in email like a champ. This was a work phone so its usage was free.
Provider: Rogers
Network: 850/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS
Battery: Lithium Ion
Talk time: 4 hours
Standby: 16 days
Bluetooth: 2.0
Screen resolution: 320×240 with 65k colours
Memory: 64 mb
6. Blackberry Curve 8310
This was a pretty sweet phone though I bought it outright without a contract so it cost me quite a lot. The GPS was a great feature and I much preferred it over the 8700r.
Provider: Rogers
Network: 850/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS
Battery: Lithium Ion
Talk time: 4 hours
Standby: 408 hours/17 days
Bluetooth: 2.0
Screen resolution: 320×240 with 65k colours
Memory: 64 mb
Camera: 2.0 MP
7. Blackberry Curve 8900
This is my current phone and my favorite so far.
Provider: Rogers
Network: 850/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS + 802.11b/g WIFI
Battery: 1400 mAHr removable/rechargeable cryptographic lithium cell
Talk time: 5.5 hours
Standby: 15 days
Bluetooth: 2.0 + EDR
Screen resolution: 480×360 with 65k colours
Memory: 256 mb
Camera: 3.2 MP
A lot of this data came from various google searches but the best resource was http://www.cellphones.ca There is a good chance I have some of the data inputted incorrectly – let me know if you see something that needs to be fixed.
