I’ve been running my hackintosh (osx86) computer for a few weeks now and I am very happy with the switch. I really do prefer OSX over XP and even over Ubuntu to an extent. There are however a few problems with my install that need to be rectified before I can consider it a 100% success.

The first major issue that I ran into was with USB devices. The problem I was having was that USB drives (iPod, external disk, etc) would not mount unless they were plugged in before the OS booted. This was solved by downloading and installing usb_fix_1.3.mpkg.zip. The problem is due to a difference between the kernel version (9.2.0) and the system.kext version (9.2.2). After the reboot everything worked.

Remaining issues:

DVD burning brings down the whole system. For whatever reason when I try to burn a DVD the whole system crashes and needs to be physically rebooted. Using the built in disc burner the system crashes at about 1%, however using Toast Titanium 9 I am able to get to 99% before the whole thing dies. I don’t know if it has to do with the type of burner I have or some misconfiguration but the problem still needs to be resolved.

The other non show stopper that remains is the fact that the 2nd and 3rd outputs on my video card don’t work. My card has 2 DVI outputs as well as an output for component video. I would like to be able to watch MKV’s on my TV (as my PS3 does not yet handle that format). I found this thread at insanely mac which talks about how to resolve the problem, however I am yet to attempt the fix.

Lastly (for now anyway) I’d like to know what to do about updating the system. I am running 10.5.2 and I am constantly reminded that there is an update available. I have read a few stories about people attempting the upgrades only to find themselves with dead machines. I am not willing to risk my entire install at this point so I am yet to try to update, but it is something I would like to do in the near future.

I put my hackintosh box together last night and it works perfectly!

I’d tried it in the past on an older desktop and a new hp laptop with no real success. The hp dv 2000 could run it - but only from an external hard drive and at a max resolution of 1024×768. I put together a new system yesterday based on some recommendations found on the internet and so far everything is running perfectly.

I will say that I based my purchases on the lifehacker article found here - but I upgraded where compatibility would allow. The system was built more cheaply and with better parts.

Here are the parts that I used:

Processor - Intel Cored 2 Duo E8400 LGA 775 3.0 GHz 6MB 1333 Mhz

Motherboard - Asus P5K-VM Intel G33 S775

RAM - 2×2048 OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400

Case - Antec Sonata III Mid tower (w/ 500 watt power supply)

Hard Drive - Seagate 500 GB 7200 rpm SATA2 drive with 32 MB cache

DVD - LG IDE DVD-RW 20x

Video Card - From existing system - Asus Nvidia 8600 GT w/ 256 VRAM PCI-E

I used the Kalyway 10.5.2 install disc and it the install went flawlessly. There were no flags or anything set during the install (was I supposed to?) and I did not make any adjustments to the BIOS. The only thing I had to do was install drivers for my Nvidia card. I used the 10.5.2_NVkexts+.pkg package (found here) on my first post install boot and it worked flawlessly. I have full acceleration with my card and I am running at the max resolution of my monitor.

The next thing I will try is getting my Linksys wireless card to work. It has yet to be installed but I might give that a shot tonight.

UPDATE: While I haven’t tried installing the wireless card I did pick up a mac keyboard to add to my authenticity The question that still remains however is what do I do with the system updates? I can see that it wants me to update the core system but I am afraid that doing so might mess up my install. Does anyone have any advice with regards to this? I will note that I have updated installed applications such as itunes and quicktime with no problems.

My only annoyance with things (aside from having to get used to using the command button instead of control for copy/paste, etc) is that there is a 5 second or so delay when I boot the machine. It gives me a prompt for boot options - I need to figure out how to get rid of this.
